Tally Prime
Simplifying Business for Millions
About
Tally Prime is India's most popular business accounting software, trusted by over 7 million businesses. The software provides accounting, inventory management, GST compliance, banking integration, and statutory reporting — all tailored for the Indian business environment.
Tally's strength lies in its simplicity, speed, and deep understanding of Indian taxation (GST, TDS, TCS, e-Way Bills, e-Invoicing). For millions of Indian businesses, "accounting" and "Tally" are synonymous. The software is keyboard-driven for fast data entry — experienced Tally users can process transactions at remarkable speed.
History
Tally was created by Shyam Sunder Goenka and his son Bharat Goenka in 1986 in Bengaluru. The first version, "Peutronics Financial Accountant," was a DOS-based accounting program. It was renamed to "Tally" and grew to become India's dominant accounting software.
Key milestones: Tally 4.5 (1996, Windows), Tally 7.2 (2005, VAT), Tally.ERP 9 (2009, expanded ERP features), and Tally Prime (2020, complete UI redesign). The introduction of GST in India (2017) cemented Tally's position as the go-to software for tax compliance. By 2024, Tally had 7 million+ active businesses and was used in 100+ countries.
